Statement of Significance

Toodyay Public Library has historic value as a principal public building with a long association with the development of Toodyay, its cultural and administrative institutions and prominent citizens. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape. It provides opportunity for the understanding of previous building practices and materials. The place has social value as it demonstrates a 19th century way of life and has a continuity of public use.

Physical Description

Single storey structure with double height parapeted entrance. The brick construction is rendered and painted and has a corrugated iron roof which forms a gable at the front. The gable is concealed behind the large semi-circular rendered parapet. The original hall building had adzed scissor trusses and a shingle roof. The 1886 extensions comprised a wing each side of the front creating a symmetrical facade. They were of brick rendered construction with a corrugated iron roof with a low level undecorated horizontal parapet. Rendered facade with face brick side elevations. Timber framed sash windows and panelled doors with fanlights. Decorative string course and door moulding to main section. Brick extensions to rear.

History

The Mechanics Institutes established in rural towns and villages were a means of providing instruction for tradesmen, many of whom had not received an education as children and were established in Perth and Fremantle as early as 1851. The Newcastle Mechanics Institute was formed at the inaugural meeting in July 1866 in which Rev Harper was elected president. A building committee was formed and land for the Institute Hall was donated by Charles Monger. Subscriptions were sought throughout the town and a donor list was displayed in the town, ladies raised funds at bazaars and during the show and Races and by April 1867 the bricks had been made but there was insufficient funds to pay for the labour. In 1871 during a tea meeting at the Freemasons Hotel organised by Innes, Young men's Reading Club with James Drummond chairing the meeting was formed. It was said to be the biggest social event ever held in Toodyay. the club later amalgamated with the Mechanics Institute and the club's library was installed in the hall. W.G. Leeder was active in the Mechanics' Institute and instrumental in the extensions which took place in 1886, adding two reading rooms. The library was expanded and renovated in 2010.

Statement of Significance

The place has historic value for its associations with Daniel Connor, William Demasson, Joseph Wroth and Dr. O'Reilly. The place has aesthetic value as a good example of the period and contributes to the streetscape of Toodyay.

Physical Description

Single storey structure of painted brick construction with iron roof. Timber framed windows and bay windows. Verandah with iron bellcast canopy.

History

The shop was built by Daniel Connor in the early 1870's. By 1875, William Demasson, a carpenter wheelwright from Guildford built the dwelling next to the shop. His wife ran the adjacent store and added the connecting section. In 1886, Demasson bought the shop from Connor. By the late 1890's, Demasson was a notable fruit grower and vigneron and a Toodyay district representative. The Toodyay Roads Board bought the dwelling around 1889 and there were a number of tenants. When the doctor's residence and surgery in Lincoln Street were demolished for the Standard Gauge Railway, this dwelling was rented to Dr. P. O'Reilly and the shop became his surgery. After the doctor and his wife's deaths, the building became a gallery, historical society headquarters and eventually a home for Shire employees.

The place has social value as it demonstrates a former way of life through thye scale of the dwelling and the size of the rooms. The building has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape.

Physical Description

The cottage is located close to the front of the property boundary and the remainder of the lot is a is a garden with small outbuildings. The cottage is a four room brick and iron cottage with later additions of fibre cement sheeting at the front and rear. The front addition is an enclosures of a front verandah which is likley to be an original feature. The northern wall of the original cottage has been rednered but all other brick surfaces are face brickwork of a distinctive style which consists of a repeated pattern of three stretcher courses and one header course (English Garden Bond). There is one red brick chimney and the visible windows are top hung louvred.

History

The dwelling is one of several built by local landowner, Daniel Connor (1832‐1898). Connor had established himself as a wealthy businessman in the Toodyay district since arriving in the colony in 1853 from Ireland. Connor purchased several blocks of land in the North Toodyay area in the late 1880s and it is likely that he employed builder George Hasell to construct the group of workers homes on Telegraph Road. Connor rented out the properties to local workers. The occupants of the place have not been established until the 1930s when it was occupied by Charles John Beard and his family. Beard operated a blacksmith business from the property for many years. In 1940 it was purchased by the Ralph family who had been farming in the Bejoording area for many years. Members of the Ralph family have continuously occupied the property until the present day [2010]. The place has been used by the Bureau of Meterorology as the weather station for Toodyay which has been recording data in Toodyay since 1877. It is not known when the weather station was first located at 37 Telegraph Road.

Statement of Significance

The place has historic value for its associations with Magistrate Piesse and the development of vineyards in the region. The place is also associated with the Gadsdon family. The place has social value for its association with the development of the hospitality industry in the region. The place has aesthetic value for its form, style and rural setting.

Physical Description

Victorian single storey residence with feature gable, decorative timbering and finial and tri-paned timber framed sash windows. The hipped and gabled main roof is corrugated iron. Timber sash windows. Return verandah with turned timber posts. There is a skillion roofed lean-to area to the side. A recent extension of rendered and scored brick construction gives the appearance of ashlar stone. This extension also includes a low hipped metal roof. Burnt out and derelict mudbrick, brick and stone outhouses are in very poor condition to the rear of the dwelling. There are the remains of a stone dwelling close to the gated access which is derelict and show signs of some fire damage. The remnants of a fire place remains.

History

In 1899 A.N. Piesse purchased the farm and the following year became the Resident Magistrate in Toodyay. In 1902, when the Resident Magistrate post was abolished, he retired to develop his vineyards. In the late 1920's the farm was sold and converted into a guest house which was run by the Gadsdon family.

Statement of Significance

The place has historic value as it is associated with the settlement and development of the Toodyay district. The historic value of the place is also apparent through the association with the early settlers the Lloyd family, the Rev Charles Harper and builder Henry Hassel. The 1900 addition to the house has rarity value as the bricks are unique in their colour due to the origin of the clay from a nearby creek bed.

Physical Description

Single storey residence, rendered stone and brick facades. A verandah with bush timber columns extends across the full extent of the rear of the property. Original roof timbers have been retained. The house has been extended with a step down to a lower level from the original. Original floor timbers and fire place remain in the dwelling. Beyond the houses there is a circular rendered brick well in the garden plus a more traditional bush timber and stone well located in the field beyond the barn and a bush timber crossing over a pit. A bush timber and corrugated iron barn with raised timber floor and a small roofless mudbrick rear section is sited close to the house.

History

In 1832 the Nardie grants were taken up by James Lloyd, the proprietor of the 'Star and Garter' in Fremantle. Charles Harper took the lease for the property between 1840 to 1855. He was to become Reverend Charles Harper, the first man to be ordained by the Anglican Church in the colony and the Minister in Toodyay from 1849. Charles Harper did not occupy the property and took up residence elsewhere in the area. James Lloyd's widow and two sons, Charles and Joseph, returned to the property after Harper's lease expired and divided the property between them. James named his section 'Calbaline' and Joseph had 'Nardine'. The brothers married Sinclair sisters. Charles Lloyd built a stone homestead on his 'Calbaline' property in 1871. In 1900 the house was added to by Henry Hasell (son of George Hasell), making bricks from the clay of a nearby creek bed. The salmon coloured bricks with russet flashes are unique to this building.
