Statement of Significance

The Carrolup Hall has provided facilities for community activities over the years. Extensive records and plans of the building are held by Brent Ladyman.

Physical Description

Horseyards, jumps and riding arenas were laid over the golfing greens and fairways. The Methodist Church hired the hall on occasion for social dances. Theatricals and public meetings have been held in the hall over the years and is was also used as a polling place. Since being used by the Pony Club many alterations and modifications have been made. During camps the hall converts to a dormitory.

History

Carrolup settlers built the Agricultural Hall on Reserve 1702 in 1902. The committee elected to supervise building from Government Grant of 250 Pounds. Plans and specifications were drawn up. On the 5th March 1902 the Hon. F.H. Piesse officially opened the Hall which has since been used for Church services, as a school, a golf club and now a pony club.

  • 24678 St Andrew's Church Hall

Statement of Significance

The hall is primarily significant in terms of its relationship to St Andrew's Church, which is the oldest remaining church in Katanning. The functions and events, which occurred in the hall, contributed very much to the social and religious life of the people of Katanning, in particular the large Anglican community. The style of the hall is uncommon in Anglican architecture of the period and is commonly found in non-conformist religious architecture. The hall and church have strong links with the Piesse family, which contributed much to the construction of both buildings.

Physical Description

A Federation Tudor brick asymmetrical construction, timber framed corrugated iron roof with twin roof vents. It is a four bay plan with a centrally located entry between asymmetrical elements at the front. The bricks were locally made. The building also features castellated parapet walling and buttressing, the latter possibly being added after the hall was completed. The roofing structure is quite unique with a combined rafter and tension cable design truncating the steep roof pitch. The original Gothic arched front door has been replaced. Windows and other doors all feature Gothic arches. Extensions made to the rear of the church are of a different style. The interior has solid timber roof panelling and painted walls. Drainage and brick restoration was undertaken in 2005. Concrete ramps have been added to the front and back doors for disabled access.

History

The Hon. F H Piesse laid the foundation stone for the church hall on 27th March 1911, on a site adjacent to the existing St Andrew's Church. The architect was E Summerhayes. The hall was used weekly for parish meetings, dances, fundraisers and various other activities. A few years after the hall was completed, additions were made to the rear, which included kitchen and eating facilities, toilet amenities. In the mid 1950s, room was set-aside in the hall for office space for Mr A C Stark, from Wells Organisation Pty Ltd. Mr Stark organised many fundraising events and was instrumental to the continued growth and development of the Anglican community during this time.

Statement of Significance

The residence at 43 Aberdeen Street is historically and socially significant in that it was the first Lutheran Manse in the Katanning district, and the residence/surgery of the well-known doctor, Dr House. The residence also has some aesthetic and architectural significance in that it is the only building constructed from soapstone, which was quarried from local farming properties.

Physical Description

The former manse was built with local soap stonewalls, painted corrugated iron roof and timber framing. A low gabled roof verandah spans the width of the house and is supported on Tuscan columns. Several additions and alterations have occurred, including the addition of a kitchen, maid's quarters, a freestanding garage and an Italianate verandah. The additions to the rear are in brick. The twin dormer windows have been converted to a single window.

History

The former Lutheran Manse was built for the Lutheran minister in 1908-09 by the church community. Stone was quarried locally and the Anglican congregation donated materials and funds. When the minister left the residence, the next occupant was Dr House, who used the house as his surgery as well as his home. In about 1910 the doctor added a kitchen, maid's quarters and the garage. In 1962 the Italianate verandah was added.

Statement of Significance

Delrama is a good example of a middle-class residence and of a dentist residence. Its distinct style contributes to the built fabric of Katanning. It is socially significant because of its association with Mr and Mrs Hedges Dale who contributed greatly to the development of the community of Katanning and its many facilities.

Physical Description

Asymmetrical Inter-war bungalow in brick construction with roughcast rendered balustrades between brick piers. It has French doors leading into a full width front verandah. The verandah is carried on this square posts and has a gable over the entry. The roof is replacement colourbond. An addition to the left hand side is primitive. A new garden fence surrounds a simply lawned garden with a collection of canary island palms, petunia beds and roses. The carport, fence and side extension are intrusive. In 1996 the owners of the property undertook significant restoration work and a timber was added in October 2000.

History

Delrama was built as a residence for the local dentist, Mr Stanley Hedges Dale, who practised in Katanning from 1921 to 1957. It was built around the time he married Muriel Beeck, daughter of the well-known sheep-breeder H O Beeck in 1925. As well as being the district dentist, Stanley Dale was also a member of the Katanning Roads Board, formed the Swimming Pool Committee (and so was instrumental in the construction of the pool), he was the first secretary of the Hospital Comforts Association and was the Chairman of Directors of the Katanning Flour Mill (as well as the largest shareholder).

Statement of Significance

The original house forms part of what is now known as Balston Estate. It is a good example of a 1920s farmhouse / estate in close proximity to the town centre. It alludes to themes of occupations as well as settlement. The building style is quite unique to the area. The Balston's were also significant members of the Katanning district, not only for their farming but also as committee members of the Road Board (Mr Balston) and Marloo Club (Mrs Balston). Their estate is one of three such estates that form part of the vanguard of pioneer sheep-farmers in the Katanning and Kojonup region.

Physical Description

Comments: Le. style, additional, modifications etc. An inter-war, asymmetrical bungalow set in generous grounds, with a high pitched and gabled roof. Lower walls are brick and upper walls are roughcast render. The front is divided into three bays. The central bay is gabled with polygonal bay beneath a flat roof verandah on Tuscan columns. Lead light double hung windows flank the semi-circular porch with tiles sunhoods over and traditional gables. An extension has been built on the right hand side and a pergola and carport added to the left. The original stable is now used as a shed and is connected to the house by the carport. The house is set in large grounds with a circular drive with plantings of native trees and palms.

History

The Balston Estate, which was built for Mr and Mrs Baltson took about seven years to complete. The site was originally 200 acres and the Balston's used to keep sheep and grow wheat, barley and lupins. The house also had an elaborate English-style garden.

Statement of Significance

The King George Hostel represents only a few such hostels built in the State and therefore has rarity value. Aesthetically it is a great asset to the streetscape and is associated with one of the most prominent Katanning families - the Piesse Family - as well as Alexander Thomson - who was an active member of the Katanning district as a builder, businessman and as a politician. The hostel alludes to a prosperous period in Katanning's history and has maintained significant original integrity, having undergone very few modifications.

Physical Description

The King George Hostel, on the corner of Austral Terrace and Albion Street, is important to both streetscapes, its value being simply two storey facade and continuous timber verandahs and plain vertical balustrades. There is also a polygonal tower on the corner site, which is a well-known landmark in the area. The design of the hostel is a simplified version of the (federation) filigree style, which is characterised by shady corner filigree verandahs extended over the footpath. The building is brick (locally made) and stucco with French Marseilles pattern tiles.

History

The King George Hostel, called St George's Hostel, opened in 1913 and was built by Alexander Thomson for Melville Piesse, a son of F H Piesse. Katanning was at this time experiencing a boom in farming and so accommodation became necessary for the influx of itinerant workers. The hostel, which was unlicensed accommodation house, differs from a hotel in that it has shops along the street frontages rather than public bars. Some of the original shops tenants were: an accountant, boot maker, tailor and mercer, an agency for Farmers' Mercantile and Chaff Mills Ltd, an assurance company, Doctor Pope, newsagency and barber and Gilbert's chemist. Alexander Thomson was an experienced builder, who settled in Katanning in 1905. He built a number of prominent buildings in the Katanning district, as well as homesteads. Members of the Piesse Family managed the hostel. Melville Piesse, who built it, died in 1920 and his father then managed the hostel. Harold, his brother, also managed it and lived there with his family in one of the flats during the depression years. The hostel is largely in original condition: brick walls and tiled roof, wooden floors and verandah posts. There are six separate shops on the ground level, including an accountant's business, which has been located in the hostel since 1913. The shops and stairwell have pressed metal ceilings and the wooden staircase is in original condition. In the hall is an ornate wooden hallstand with the Piesse crest carved into it. The public dining room, original large stove and bakers oven have all remained part of the hostel.

Statement of Significance

The Masonic Lodge has some social significance, representing the growth and strength of middle-class, Protestant ideology in a rural town. It also illustrates the segregation of gender activities in being a male only institution.

Physical Description

The original structure is surrounded by numerous additions and alterations that have submersed the original intent. Toilet facilities and rooms have been added. The fa?ade has been remodelled.

History

In 1898 Bishop Riley consecrated the Katanning Masonic Lodge (No. 30). The establishment of a lodge reflected the growing middle-class Protestant ethos in the town and many prominent men of the community were to join. It was not until several years later that the lodge could erect its own hall. The hall cost approx £485 to erect and the foundation stone was laid by Wor. Bro. The Hon Wesley Maley, MLC. The lodge was consecrated and dedicated by the MW Pro. Grand master, Bishop Riley of Perth, on Wednesday 14th November 1903. The hall before it was completed, was reported in the local paper as having two rooms: The main one of which will be 35 feet in length. Platforms will be provided in either side of this room whilst a dais will be put at the extreme end. The other room will be about half the size and into it will lead a porch way, which will be an imposing one, having steps of brick and cement leading to the door and the Masonic emblems above the portal. The building will be 25ft in height, 59ft in length, and 29ft in width. [GSH, 29/8/03, p.2]

Statement of Significance

The powerhouse has heritage significance in its association with the development of technology (electricity) and its impact on the Katanning community, and as a good example of a type of industrial place, which has a moderate level of integrity.

Physical Description

A stretcher and English garden wall bond structure with a gabled roof and full length ridge ventilator. The roof has been re-clad with Fibro-cement sheeting.

History

The powerhouse is associated with the Katanning Roller Flour Mill. Piesse established the power plant in 1902 to power his mill. In 1904, a private Act of Parliament allowed Piesse to generate and supply power and lighting to the town. Katanning was one of the firsts towns in Western Australia to have electricity. In the late 1920s, the electric light and power plant was upgraded, and the new generator supplied the town until 1961, when the SEC (now Western Power) purchased the power plant and electrical distribution system for £85,125, converting it to AC power the following year. 1980 - Sign writer Ray Ford bought and continued his business from the building. 1990 - Jeremy George used the back rooms for an upholstery business.

Statement of Significance

St Patrick's Church was the first Roman Catholic Church to be built between Albany and Beverley and therefore has historical and social significance.

Physical Description

An improvement carried out in 1959 surround Cavanagh's original concept and the campanile appears to be part of this campaign. The whole place has been rendered in an attempt to unify the various parts.

History

The first wood and iron Catholic Church, St Patrick's was opened in 1893. This was the first Catholic Church to be built between Albany and Beverley, and was located at the southern end of Austral Terrace. The first parish priest was Father Duff and Bishop Gibney laid the foundation stone. By the early 1920s the parish had outgrown its church, so in 1923 a block of land was purchased on the north side of the Amherst Street for £300. The site of the original church was sold to the Vacuum Oil Company for £450. The new church was opened on 19th August 1923. Father Reidy having been a major force behind the project and the church was blessed by Archbishop Clune. The Architect was M F Cavanagh and the builder was Alex Thomson. St Patrick's school was also erected on the church block in the same year. In 1937/38, Father Byrne carried out improvements to the church by adding a confessional box and new seating. In the same year Mrs. M J Garrity placed a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes and accompanying angels in the sanctuary. When Fr McSweeney arrived in 1959 he took over the work started by Fr Casey, and launched the "Wells Fund Raising Campaign" to raise finance for additions to the church. The additions were completed and consecrated by Rev. Goody, Bishop of Bunbury in August 1962, the designer and builder being S. Costello.

Statement of Significance

The Katanning Club is significant to the social history of the town, and the way people need to interact with each other in their leisure time. There is also rarity value in its steward accommodation, which was a feature not often seen in country clubs. There is also architectural significance, having been designed by the prominent Perth architects, Cavanagh & Cavanagh, and being well proportioned and carefully detailed.

Physical Description

The club is a single storey, asymmetrical bungalow style building with brick walls and white tuck-pointing and stucco stringcourses. The hipped and gabled roof is of corrugated zincalume. The verandah is supported on circular stylised columns topped with pseudo Doric capitals and torus mouldings. The fascias are supported on console brackets. The main gable is elaborately decorated with niches, half timbering and roughcast render. The minor gable to the verandah has a central medallion and is surrounded by wreaths. The windows are timber framed double hung. The ceilings and cornices are pressed metal. A room has been added to the clubhouse, and the bar has undergone renovations.

History

By 1914, the men in Katanning were in need of a district social club. As a result, a committee was formed (predominantly of rural background), land was purchased (213.15s) and architects submitted plans of the clubhouse. The design of Cavanagh & Cavanagh was accepted, and Mr F L Kleeman was the successful contractor to build the clubhouse for 1803. (This amount was later adjusted to allow for an error in the additions). The Anderson brothers, Ross and Thomas, were extremely generous for their financial support of the clubhouse. The club, a bungalow style building, set on a lot of over one acre, was a male domain, except for the token "Ladies Day" held annually. It was not until 1985 that women were admitted as members when the club combined with the Ladies Marloo Club. The clubhouse also had live-in steward quarters, which was a relatively unique feature.

Statement of Significance

Reidy House, the former boarding school of St Rita's formed part of the larger Roman Catholic school institution, which included a primary school, secondary school, convent and boarding school. The building has some historical significance in that it provided boarding facilities in the town, Kobeelya being the other boarding facility. It was unfortunately built at a time of cautious growth with the advent of the Depression, but still survived and obtained a certain level of success.

Physical Description

Reidy House is a two-storey brick and corrugated iron structure. The style is reminiscent of Inter-War Mediterranean or Georgina architecture, with its arcade on both stories, medium pitched hipped roof, brick bearing walls and semi-circular headed windows on the lower level. The arcade is carried on Corinthian columns and arches. The balustrade is a pierced screen and employs Tudor motifs. It has a walled garden with pines, palms, roses and conifers. The front door is panelled with leadlight side and upper lights.

History

In spite of opposition, the Sisters of Our lady of the Mission erected a pretentious boarding school in 1929 at a cost of £10,000. It was officially opened in 1930. Unfortunately the Depression began to hit hard not long after the building was completed and the cost of the building was to be a financial burden for the Sisters for many years. The boarding school, which formed part of St Rita's School, continued until 1959, when it was decided not to continue a boarding school any longer in Katanning. The Sisters then moved into the boarding school and used it as their convent. Secondary education by St Rita's also ceased with the school reverting to Primary teaching only and renamed St Patrick's. Reidy House was the third convent building to be occupied by the Sisters, although the first convent was actually built by them. Prior to their convent being built, the Sisters lived in the former Brockhurst Hospital, then before that in 12 Britannia Street. Reidy House was named after Rev Father Michael Reidy who was a Catholic Priest in Katanning. In 1973 the Sisters moved out and the convent was sold to the State Government. Reidy house has been used as an annex for St Andre's Hostel and now houses the Government Department of Community Services.

Statement of Significance

Although the building has undergone both external and internal modifications, it still has historical significance in that it was the first public hospital in Katanning. It also has rarity value, as there are very few examples in the state of early medical facilities.

Physical Description

A single storey, brick structure, corrugated iron roof with a ridge vent and 4m high ceiling. The nurses' quarters and scullery have since been removed and the building was divided into 3 sections in the 1960s to be used as residential units. Five additional separate brick and corrugated iron units were also constructed on the same lot. The original morgue, located under the floor has been converted into a cellar.

History

The building began construction in 1892 as Katanning's first hospital, the contractors being Messrs Thorn, Bower and Stewart. Although completed in 1892, the hospital still had no furniture to speak of as late as 1894 and many complaints about the new building were voiced in the West Australian: It is now over 18 months since the substantial building was erected and during the intervening period it has stood as a sort of silent guarantee of benefits to come, but at the same time utterly useless to all intents and purposes. Upwards of a dozen cases, or even more, have come to and passed through Katanning in this time, all or most of which, would have remained here and under Dr House's care must have been satisfactory treated. [WA,27/8/1894, p.7] Additions to the hospital were made in 1894 and in 1899 (contractor J H Brown, £272/10/4). Nurse's quarters were added in 1906 (contractor A Thomson £410) and in 1911 the scullery was built (contractor L L Kleeman, £179/17/6). These buildings were connected by a series of covered walkways that blend with the verandah in pitch and materials. Under the floor of one section of the hospital was the morgue. This space is now used as a cellar. The old hospital was turned into a residence when the new government hospital was completed in 1925 in Kobeelya Street. From then until the 1960s the building was used as a residence, after which it was purchased by Mr Ambrosini and divided into three separate units. A block of 5 single storey flats was built adjacent to the Amherst Units. Up to the present the verandah and walkway, nurses' quarters and scullery have been removed.

Statement of Significance

St Andrew's Church was the first Church to be built in the district, and one of the earliest buildings, thereby it has high historical, religious and architectural significance. The building of the church was made possible by the community efforts and generosity of the Piesse family and Millar Bros. Collectively, the church and hall buildings create a minor precinct of red brick buildings with stucco detailing that is reflective of the development of Katanning in the years 1898-1911. They are also closely linked to the prominent Piesse family who shoed great generosity to the establishment of these buildings. St Andrew's also contributes to Katanning's sense of place as a reminder of European settlement of the area and the fulfilment of their religious and social needs.

Physical Description

The church is in a modest Federation Gothic design, utilising the yellow brick of the district with restrained stucco detailing. The building is representative of late nineteenth century church architecture, featuring brick buttresses with stucco caps. Stucco Gothic arches are utilised for all windows and doors and interior walls have been rendered and painted. The church is a simple four bay auditory plan with vestry and lancet windows with three framed lead light panes.

History

The first Anglican services were held in Katanning, in the Katanning Hotel, as early as 1890, and they later moved into Piesse's newly completed hall in Argent Street.? Mrs F H Piesse laid the foundation stone of the church building on 25th June 1898. Bishop Riley consecrated the Church on the 9th October 1898. The architect was P W Harrison of Perth, and the builder was A J Stewart of York. Piesse donated 40,000 bricks and Messrs Millar Bros. Made a gift of the timber. The church was named at St Andrew's Church in Hartburn, a tiny village in Northumberland, England, where the Bishop had preached while on a visit to England the previous year. Bishop Riley presented the valuable gift of a set of chancel furniture, drapes and a solid silver communion chalice and paten for the new Church from the people of Hartburn. The beautiful East window, depicting the Ascension, and the enlargements to the Sanctuary were dedicated on 26th March 1911. The brass lectern, made by Mr G Holdsworth of Bridgetown, was given by parishioners in memory of Mr F H Piesse. The jarrah panelling in memory of Mrs William Pemble, and the Sanctuary lamp, were added in the 1930s. The side alter of Mr S Hugh, given in memory of RH Pelham-Thorman, was dedicated on 2nd November 1943 and the Processional Cross came from the Brotherhood of S Boniface. A new electronic organ, costing £675 was dedicated on 22 October 1961 and installed in memory of Frank Jenner. The rectory in Aberdeen Street was built in 1969.
