Constructed from 1989, Constructed from 1889
This site is historically and socially significant, as it marks the first official attempt to give the children of Katanning an education. The success of the classes and the continued growth in population, particularly due to the railway line, eventually led to more formal and permanent educational services being established.
The original railway station kitchen was a corrugated iron construction. Nothing remains of this building. The concrete cairn is a pyramid shaped with a bronze plaque.
With many families now settling in the new town, the children were in need of some local educational facility. As a result, school classes opened in 1890 under the supervision of Mary Bell. The classes were held in the former kitchen for the railway station, which was one of the first buildings constructed by the WA Land Company for the Beverly to Albany line. The classes did move from there to Piesse's Hall for a brief period, until 1894 when the first purpose build government school was erected. The cairn was erected during the centenary of Katanning in 1989 and a time capsule placed inside. This time capsule was made up from some of the items in the time capsule originally placed under the Piesse Memorial in 1914, with some additional items added.

Constructed from 1889
The railway station has historical, social and cultural significance in that the railway greatly widened opportunities for the district, greatly reducing their dependence on horse and dray or mail coach and opening up the town as a tourist destination. The station building would have been a central point of activity for the new town and the first point of contact for visitors. The railway made possible ventures such as the flourmill, provided employment and made Katanning the "heart" of the Great Southern region. The station buildings, which have remained very much intact, also add to the streetscape of Austral Terrace.
Building is of brick and corrugated iron construction with wide overhanding eaves, supported by large cantilevered timber brackets. Slight alterations and some additions have occurred. The brickwork is laid in English bond and is set above a rendered plinth, with windows being double hung sashes and doors are mostly four-panel timber.
The original railway station was constructed early in 1889, when the railway line was established. The railway was officially opened in February 1889, with settlers from all over the district gathering to meet the first trainload of passengers. It was not only as a railway station that this site was important to Katanning. In 1890 the first school classes were held in the stations former corrugated iron kitchen and this was to continue until the town had its first purpose built school in 1894. The old goods shed was pulled down in 1904 to allow for improvements, which included large railway yards and a new goods shed. The station buildings also underwent some improvements. In the mid 1960s the railway discontinued passenger travel and was subsequently used as a goods service only. Kanwork leased office space in the old station building, where they have been from since 1991.

Constructed from 1896
The Town Hall has high historical and social significance. It has been the centre of many important institutions in Katanning, such as the Mechanics' Institute, the Roads Board and the Agricultural Committee, as well as providing an important social venue for the local community. Although it has undergone many modifications and changes, the original hall building is still the main feature and has significant architectural value.
The foundation stone for the Katanning Town Hall was laid on 22nd August 1896 by the Hon F H Piesse, MLA. The building was made possible through the donation of 10,000 bricks by F & C Piesse, government subsidy and voluntary labour to cart the bricks, sand and lime. The opening ceremony was reported in the Australian Advertiser: A photograph of the tout ensemble was then taken by the representatives of Messrs Nixon and Mirrilees, Fremantle, and then the casket containing town records ....a copy of the West Australian of August 21st, and of the Australian Advertiser of August 22nd, together with all the silver coins of the realm, was sealed and securely cemented at the back of the foundation stone, which was a block of granite suitably inscribed, [AA, 27/8/1896] The agricultural hall cost £3000 to build, the contractor being Mr George Thomas, and the contractor for the woodwork was Mr Andrew Stewart. It was officially opened in 1897.. In 1899 it became known as the Mechanics' Institute and Public Hall after it was decided at a public meeting to amalgamate the Mechanics' Institute and the Agricultural Hall committee. Improvements were carried out to the hall at this time, giving the Mechanics' Institute members permanent quarters. By 1903 some ill feeling had developed between the institute members and the agriculturalists over the suggestion to change the name to the more simple "Mechanics' Institute (inc,)". The Roads Board also leased a room in the hall for their office. In 1907 a new Mechanic's Hall was erected next to the old one, which was by now in a state of disrepair and included "four shops, a main entrance, a spacious cloakroom, a ticket office, a large stage and dressing rooms". [Bignell, p 238] Elaborate wrought iron gates (made by B Makutz) were also added, "scenic stage backdrops designed by P Goatcher and a panelled ceiling, the work of a Mr Tindale - all well-known Perth contractors - while the intricate electric light system was personally supervised by F T R Piesse". [Bignell, p.38] The architect for this work was J Herbert Eales and the contractor was Alex Thomson. The existing hall was also renovated at the same time, using brick partitioning and incorporated a reading room and library as well as a billiards room and caretakers quarters. Not long after this work, the Roads Board offices were also refurbished. Extensive additions and alterations were completed in 1928, which included the addition of the second storey. The architects were Eales & Cohen of Perth, the contractor was Alex Thomson and the contract price was £6495. With the completion of these additions and alterations, the building was now more commonly referred to as the Town Hall. Inside the hall was housed the Road Board offices and meeting room, and a large modern hall with a gallery. A library was added in 1944. The building is rendered in a mannered classical mode. In 1979 additions and alterations were carried out in a Post-war Functionalist style. The architects were Henderson and Thompson, and the supervisor was V C Philpott.

Constructed from 1904
The National Bank was the first bank to be established in the new town of Katanning. Since erecting its own premises in 1904 the bank was always been located at this same site. The site therefore has high historical and social significance.
A brick structure with rendering to the facing two walls and a flat corrugated iron roof. The wall running along Austral Terrace is predominantly glass. The present structure has little aesthetic merit.
In 1890 the first National Bank manager arrived in Katanning to open a branch in the town. After only three years, however, the branch closed business, due mainly to the economic depression in the eastern states. It was not until 1902 that a National Bank branch was again opened in Katanning in the Piesse Complex in Austral Terrace, the manager being John Anderson. By 1904 business was so good that the bank erected its own premises on the present bank location on Austral Terrace. This bank was to be brick and consist of eight rooms with the business portion of the establishment facing the Roller Flour Mill. [GSH, 30/4/04] Electricity was supplied to the bank from the Roller Flour Mill across the road and it is reputed to be the first bank in WA to be connected to electric power. In 1911 extensive additions and alterations were carried out to the bank. The bank was rebuilt in 1980s.

Constructed from 1901
The former F & C Piesse Store has high historical and social significance as it played an integral part in the economic and social development of the Shire of Katanning. It was the "pioneer" store of the district. It also is associated with the most prominent families in Katanning, that of the Piesse family as well as the Richardson's. The building also maintains a strong architectural and aesthetic significance, particularly in terms of its streetscape value, despite the alterations and modifications that have been made to the exterior. It was one of the most up-to-date stores of its kind in the state when it was originally built. The interior has little, if any, heritage significance.
The former F & C Piesse Store is a two-storey brick and corrugated iron structure. The fa9ade is Federation Italianate in style with emphasised piers and balustrade parapet. The building also features a central pediment with a rural motif above the name F & C Piesse. The building has undergone many renovations and alterations, particularly in 1985. The original timber posted verandah was removed and replaced with cantilever style awning. The face brickwork has been painted and disabled toilets added in June 2002.
The Piesse brothers first established a one-room store in the town of Katanning in 1889, at the time the railway was established. Owing to their success, they were later able to replace this with a more substantial wood and iron structure. In 1901 (?) the Piesse complex was erected - the third and finest of their stores. The building was designed by E Summerhayes, of Perth, and built by J H Brown, the contract price being over £3000. The Great Southern Herald described the new and up-to-date building as it was being completed: The retail shop, with its handsome plate-glass front is, of course, the central feature in the building. Its dimensions are 52ft x 50ft and is entered by two imposing approaches having tiled floors and screen lobbies the latter being provided for keeping dust out of the building. The shop itself is provided with handsome shelving and fittings for the display of the various goods on sale and the five counters form a very effective and detailed part of the work and all have been arranged with drawers and bins for the reception of goods. [GSH; 5/1/05, p. 3] Some of the other special features of the new complex included the mirror in the millinery department which was "7ft x 4ft, surrounded with beautifully designed embossed glass panes, the initials of the firm being conspicuously worked thereon"; the main staircase; the 6 offices; the leadlights' the showroom on the upper floor, the Italian style of the front elevation and the verandah floored with "patent granolithic paving". The whole building was serviced by electric light. [GSH, 5/10/05,p.3] From here the Piesse brothers continued their successful trading operations until 1904 when Robert Lawson Richardson entered into the partnership and the store became known as Richardson & Co. Richardson took the store into a very successful period, whereby other branches were being opened up all over the Great Southern and Richardson becoming a household name. As a result a new wing was added to the store in 1908 to meet the demands. In 1924 the business was floated into a limited company under the name of Richardson and Co. Ltd, with Richardson as the Chairman of the Board. Extensive additions and alterations were carried out to the building in 1927, costing over £8000, when the premises were purchased from the Piesse estate. The architects were Oldham, Boas, Ednie-Brown and the contractors were Hine & May. Under the new management and with the up-to-date renovations the business was promoted as "the Pioneer Store of the District: First in 1889 -Still First in 1939". [Webse, p.38] The store has had many tenants and by 1980 it lay vacant. In 1985 local businessmen refurbished the building making it a modern shopping complex and several businesses began trading under the one roof. There are also boarding rooms on the upstairs level.

Constructed from 1898
The Katanning Hotel was one of the first hotels in Katanning and is an essential part of the streetscape of Austral Terrace. It is associated with many prominent people of the town, including the Piesse family and George McLeod. As well as being a hotel, it has been the site for many social gatherings, including Anglican Church services.
Two-storey Federation Italianate style building in a five bay rhythm with each end terminated by a turret room. Balustrades terminate roofline parapets. The two-storey verandah is carried on turned posts with a simple balustrade. All joinery is timber and remains authentic. There are internal changes.
The original single-storey wood and iron hotel was erected in 1889 by the Piesse Bros., but it was burnt to the ground in a fire in 1893 (which also resulted in the loss of an infant). "The hotel was rebuilt on its present site in 1898 and Mr George McLeod jnr purchased the goodwill and freehold". [GSH, 1/10/65. p.8] After the Second World War the Swan Brewery bought the hotel and completely modernised it. In 1965 the hotel again underwent extensive renovations. The two bar areas also underwent changes such as the ceiling being lowered and new acoustic tiles used to line the roof. Mr and Mrs Southern, who were the then licensees, carried out these renovations. Although the addition of the units - created by joining existing rooms together - reduced the number of rooms from 35 to 27, the rooms were fitted with the most modern fittings and appliances, including vinyl tiles, infrared heaters, bars and special bathroom and shower facilities.

Constructed from 1964, Constructed from 1920
Although the present Fire Station has little heritage significance, its association with the site and its continued use as the location for Katanning's Fire Station since 1920 has some value.
The present fire station is a utilitarian brick and tiled complex with accommodation for two appliances. The grounds are open and without adornment.
In 1919, the Katanning Volunteer Fire Brigade was established. A station was erected for the brigade on land exchanged from the Road Board to the Fire Brigade. The original station was constructed of wood and iron and consisted of a cottage with an engine room at the front. The successful contractor was M. C. Dawson for a cost of £321/5/-, although the finai cost ended up as £358. On 11 November 1920, the Chief Officer officially opened the Katanning Fire Station. In 1929, alterations to the station were completed, the architect being G Lavater and the cost amounting to £651. In 1963, the fire district was extended and gazetted. In 1964, the old station was demolished and the present fire station was built. The new station, which was opened in December 1965, was designed by architect K. C. Duncan (Perth), and cost just fewer than £12000 to build. When first opened the station had room for two engines and also contained a bedroom, shower, ladies' and men's toilets, kitchen and workshop.

Comments: i.e. style, additional, modifications etc. The two-storey hotel is cement rendered brick, timber-framed roof with corrugated iron sheeting. The street fa9ade is rendered in the Federation Italianate style with a parapet level balustrade linking a central panel and the terminating pediments. The original timber verandah and railings with its decorative frieze and stanchions have been removed. An awning has replaced the verandah and the shop fronts have been altered. New concrete shading devices have been applied to the upper story, visually impairing its aesthetic value. The hotel was extended in 1910. Renovations were undertaken in 2004/2005 including the addition of Pub Tab and an outdoor beer garden.
The former Railway Hotel, Katanning's second hotel, opened its doors in 1891. Richard Bell was the first publican in 1897, the Railway Hotel a wood and iron structure located directly across from the railway station, was changed to the Royal Exchange Hotel and was owned by JC Cook. In 1899, when Katanning was experiencing a building boom, A Stewart was contracted for a new Royal Exchange hotel building. The new hotel was badly damaged by fire and therefore in 1905 vast improvements were made to the hotel, the builder being Mr Alex Thomson. The two-storey hotel was constructed from bricks made from the F & C Piesse Brickworks

Constructed from 1925, Constructed from 1905
This building represents economic growth in Katanning, by being the headquarters of the first regular sheep sales, and a meeting place for both buyers and sellers. It was built by one of the most prominent citizens in Katanning - A E Piesse - and also associated with another important local businessman - George McLeod.
Comments: Le. style, additional, modifications etc. Two-storey Federation Free Style building, now missing its verandahs, with a central bay, flanking windows, polygonal pilasters and panels set below the upper storey openings and in the pediment with bas-relief motifs. Behind the two-storey office structure is a single storey showroom with a decorative parapet divided by decorative pilasters and raised panels between pilasters.
In 1905 A E Piesse and Company was established in Austral Terrace with offices and a showroom. The company provided farm and building equipment and the timber yards were located on the corner of the building. In 1907 the company extended its business part of this new venture. The company then began trading as Katanning Stock & trading Company Ltd, and continued dealing in livestock until 1914. The company was to feel the full effects of the Depression and leased their garage and plant to two enterprising men - Hughie Mouritz and Les Gare - who established their own garage. Some staff lost their jobs and others had to accept a lower wage. However, the company survived and was eventually able to embrace two new agencies - Ford Motor Cars and Wigmore and Co. Agricultural Machinery. As a result, new premises had to be erected by 1925 and these were at the time one of the most modern and handsome showrooms outside Perth.

The Infant Health Centre represents the growing awareness and importance of infant health, and children's special needs and requirements. The centre is also an indicator of the continued growth of the Katanning population, particularly after the War and Depression years, and has historic significance in its continued use as an infant health centre.
A domestic scale hip and gable roof building with render and face brick walls and a tiled roof and small pane side hung casement windows. The building is designed in the Inter-War Bungalow style. It has a leafy setting.
In 1938, the Katanning Branch of the Infant Health Association established this centre in Austral Terrace. The centre also housed a qualified nursing sister.

Constructed from 1958
The well is a memorial to the arrival of the Comprehensive Water Scheme to the Shire of Katanning in 1958. It also serves as a tourist attraction. It has high social significance also because of the community effort involved in its construction.
The cylindrical well is made in random rubble granite with a random granite flag stone surrounds and path. It has raised rose garden beds of granite. The top of the wishing well has been removed and the inner filled with rocks. There are two bronze plaques on the well.
The wishing well, located on the intersection of Austral Terrace and Clive Street, was unveiled on Friday 21st Match 1958, to commemorate the official opening of the Comprehensive Water Scheme at Katanning. This was made possible through the connection of Wellington Dam to the town scheme water supply. The well was erected in response to the need to have a cairn or similar structure to commemorate the occasion. The Rotary Club of Katanning put in a proposal and undertook to finance the cost of the well and its appurtenances, while the Road board carried out all construction work and provide the well surround and construct the gardens. The Rotary Club provided the design for the well and Board engineer, J C Tozer, carried out the layout for the area. Varis Bros constructed the emblem. And Wakes Garage made the wrought iron supports. The erection of the well, its immediate surround, and the garden wall was the responsibility of Italian migrants and local residents, John Palumbo and Tony Coletta. Several other Board employees were associated with the work. The plaque was unveiled by the then Premier of Western Australia, A R G Hawke, with John Tonkin MLA and Minister for Works and Water Supply also in attendance.

Constructed from 1956
The Town Clock has historical and social significance, in that it recognises the efforts and contribution of women in the shire. Its significance also lies in the fact that it was only through community effort and spirit that the erection of the clock was made possible.
The memorial clock is constructed from large granite slabs and has four clock faces. An iron weather vane sits on the top. The clock tower is slightly tapered and stands on a three-tiered concrete pedestal.
During the Commonwealth Jubilee celebrations in 1951, the community of Katanning decided to erect a memorial to the pioneer women of the district. A committee was formed to raise the money, the responsibility of this eventually being given to the Katanning Historical Society. The total cost of the clock can to £1,458 9s 8d, half of which was raised by the community donations and the balance was raised by way of rating. The construction of the clock began in 1955, with the board employees helping with the work. The historical society arranged for the bronze plaque and Mr L F W Quartermaine, local jeweller and watchmaker, won the contract in December of that year to service and supervise the running of the clock. He was to be paid £10 per annum for his services, which included the provision of batteries. Sister Elizabeth Grover unveiled the Town Clock on Friday 16th March 1956. Elizabeth Grover was born at "Indinup" and was at the time of the unveiling, the oldest surviving daughter of William Grover, who was one of the first settlers in the shire and the second policeman to be stationed at Police Pools. After the ceremony, which was attended by about 200 people, tea was served in the Town Hall. The plaque reads:: This memorial was erected by the people of Katanning and Districts to honour their pioneer women especially those bush nurses whose unselfish devotion to their fellows should never be forgotten. 16th March 1956.

Constructed from 1964, Constructed from 1926
St Stephen's Church is physical evidence of the influx of the German South Australian settlers who arrived in the Shire of Katanning at the turn of the century. Their way of life and religious beliefs were very different to the existing settlers and the church reflects this. Although integration was, at first, not always successful (particularly in light of the two World Wars), these settlers of German descent have become a significant part of the history of the shire.
The church is a simple 3 bay auditory plan with lancet windows. The walls are of brick with stucco string courses. The lower walls have been rendered and the roof replaced with zincalume. There have been three churches built by the Lutheran community. A second one replaced the original church, and the second was converted into a church hall when the third church was erected.
The first Lutheran Church was erected in 1905 in corrugated iron and wood on the site where the present hall now stands. This hall was originally built as a church in 1926 to replace the original church. A third church, the current one was erected in 1964, next-door to the second church, on the site of a house. The second church (1926) underwent modifications and additions to become the church hall, as well as provide room for Sunday school classes.

Constructed from 1929
The house at 68 Avon Street has both architectural and historic value. It has a distinctive design and is characterised by the rough stucco wall with contrasting brick quoin and herring bone work. It also represents a growing awareness of the people of Katanning to their design of houses, making them landmarks within the streetscape.
This is a single storey brick residence with a corrugated iron roof. The exterior walls have been decorated by rough stucco (lm above ground) with contrasting brick quoin work. The verandah is carried on twin posts with decorative brackets set over conglomerate stone piers. The verandah area has tile and concrete base (not original) and iron roof. The southeast side still has original timber posts. The main entry door has side and fan lights. Each room still has the original fireplaces and jarrah mantle piece. The kitchen has been modified and an extension added to the rear of the house in 1974 of a dining room and study and one bedroom. Picture railing, wide skirting and doors remain intact. A timber frame, steel roof patio was in added in April 1998.
This residence was built for Harold and Ethel Pearce in cl929. Harold worked in the first private hospital "Kerak" and married Ethel in 1923. After living for six years in hospital quarters the Pearce's moved to Avon Street and lived there until 1959.

Constructed from 1906
Dr House was a "well respected and fondly remembered family doctor and a prominent member of the Katanning community" [Anderson, p. 115] The house has been used for many important community functions, including a doctors residence, a boys grammar school and a private maternity hospital - where some of Katanning's most prominent citizens were born.
A single storey asymmetric Federation Bungalow, much altered and added to. The painted brickwork detracts from the appearance. The verandahs, on the front and south sides, have timber floorboards and posts. Elaborate woodwork is seen throughout the house, including the fireplaces, architraves and skirting boards. The timber detailing in the study is very elaborate. Inside the house are lead glass door panels and side windows and accordion doors between the lounge and dining room, which are exemplary for their time. Some ceilings in the house are not original. There are informal gardens of native and exotic plantings.
Dr House came to Katanning in 1893 as the first District Medical Officer. In 1906, Dr House built a large bungalow style house for his growing family, the builder being the well-known Alexander Thomson. The house was also used as House's practice. After the House family left Katanning, their house was sold and used as the Katanning Grammar School for Boys (1929-1934). In 1934 it was sold again to a Sister Harris and converted into a private maternity hospital and in the 1970s it was used as a boarding facility for high school students. In the 1980s the building was used as the Cornerstone Ministries (inc.) Family Church, eventually being taken over by Youth With a Mission and becoming known as Maranartha. The building has since been sold and is now used as a private residence for the Steer family. They have made some alterations.

Constructed from 1912
The building is a single storey dwelling, with tuck-pointed brickwork, timber double hung sash windows and terracotta tile roof. The wide verandah is supported by pairs of concrete Tuscan columns on concrete piers, and has iron latticework between them. All main entries have original decorative stained glass. Alterations have included the enclosing of the courtyard to form a sunroom, alterations to ceilings to incorporate art deco motifs, modernisation of kitchen and bathrooms, and conversion of original maid's room into a guest bathroom. It is set in generous grounds with the remains of the former garden and tennis court in evidence.
George McLeod was a respected local businessman in Katanning, his main interest being as the owner of the Katanning Unit Hotel. He was also a member of the Roads Board Committee and the Hospital Committee and was a political candidate for the Nationalist Party in 1914. McLeod built his residence in 1912, the design being that of well-known architect M Cavanagh of Perth, who also designed other buildings in Katanning for McLeod. The contractor for the residence was L F Kleeman. The McLeods lived in this house until the mid 1930s, after which time it was converted into a block of three apartments. In 1978 Geoffrey Ogden, the local pharmacist, purchased the property and restored it to almost the original condition.
