Constructed from 1909
The building is significant historically because of its association with the Gulleys, who were a prominent Katanning farming family. It is architecturally important as a typical example of a workers cottage for the time and socially it represents the working class, which had developed in Katanning.
A single storey brick and corrugated iron dwelling of symmetrical plan, with a bull nose verandah. It has a central front door with flanking double hung sashes. A portion of the northwest wall has been rendered and painted and several asbestos additions have been carried out. The garden has a replacement timber fence with lawns, a loquat tree and other native exotic trees.
In 1907 owner of the land where the residence now stands was Hercules William Kellock. In 1909 Kellock took a mortgage of £175 to Alexander Thomson, the well-known builder/contractor in Katanning, so it is believed that Thomson was the builder of this residence. In about 1912 the property then transferred to Richard John Gulley, who purchased the property for £500. Gulley was a successful farmer in the Katanning district and with his increase in holdings came an increase in his style of living. Gulley died in 1922 and left the property to his wife Ada, although it is not certain if his wife actually lived in the house. In 1947 Earnest Arthur Daniels, who was an employee of the Roads Board, purchased the house. Since 1980 the property has been in the Strickland name.

Constructed from 1923
The formers Cook's House is significant as it represents a time of growth in Katanning when people were moving into the town, there was a housing shortage and rental prices escalated. By moving his house from Kalgoorlie to Katanning, Cook was able to afford to live in Katanning. It therefore has high social and historic significance.
This residence is a one-storey weatherboard structure with a corrugated iron roof. It was originally erected in Kalgoorlie by Mark Cook, then moved to and re-erected in Katanning when Cook transferred there. Original timber posts on the northwest side support the bullnose verandah. A concrete floor has replaced the verandah area. The half gables at the verandah ends are clad in scalloped boards. Original sash windows on northwest side also. A Katanning brick chimney on the southwest is believed to have been, built by the Art & Crafit Society in 1973. The society also carried out other alterations. The garden is simply grassed with boarder beds of conifers, roses, prunus and the like.
Mark Cook, a railway worker from Kalgoorlie moved to Katanning around 1922-23, bringing with him his weatherboard and iron home as rental prices were quite high in Katanning at this time of growth. By 1929, Cook had moved out of Broome Street and by 1935 Cook had become Assistant Station Manager.

Constructed from 1920
The Katanning War Memorial is an important reminder to the community and visitors of the First World War and Katanning's involvement in it, and the loss felt within the community of those local members who served and who died during the War.
Life-size marble statue of a soldier in battle dress mounted on a tapered granite plinth with a stepped base, with brass plaques of the names of those who died. A post, chain fence and brick paving surround the memorial. Alongside the memorial is a cannon trailer. An avenue of canary island date palms forms an approach to the memorial.
The Katanning War Memorial was unveiled in 1920 to commemorate those who died in the First World War. The names of the deceased are inscribed in brass plaques. Although the memorial is in its original location, the statue has been reorientated away from the road towards the park for ceremonial purposes.

Constructed from 1900
The building is of Historical significance as it was the original Baptist Church in Katanning.
Roof replaced with colourbond corrugated iron. Contractors - Gary and Vance Spry. Exterior repainted and interior refurbished.
In 1890 Mr E.R.Beeck and his family arrived from South Australia and sought to establish a local fellowship. The first minister of the church was Rev. William Kennedy, a graduate of Melbourne Bible College. An agricultural Hall was first used for fellowship then Mr C.A. Harris - Katanning's first master baker donated land facing Carew Street. The Baptistry was built first then the church was built around it. Stone, sand and water was carted with Mr Kennedy doing the manual labour with skill and energy. The Church opened in 1900. In 1947 paving blocks and the front fencing were donated by Mr and Mrs F.A. Rodgers in memory of sons lost in action 1943. 1946 February - September, the Hall was rented by the Education Department due to the influx of pupils to the Primary School at the introduction of school bus services. In 1960 the All Ages Bible School commenced Christian Endeavour meetings held Friday nights for different ages. 1961 saw the commencement of the "Homemakers" programme. A coffee shop was set up in the Church Hall. In 1985 land was purchased from P.L. Bolto machinery with a view to extensions being made, however, in 1986 the Kobeelya property became available and was bought by the Baptist Church. The Carew Street property was then sold to the Tang family who converted it into a Chinese Restaurant.

York House is significant in that it is an example of an early stationmaster's house, although several alterations and modifications have been conducted.
The house is a single storey brick dwelling with corrugated zincalume roof. Bull-nosed verandah on turned posts with post brackets. Double-hung sash windows with a sun hood over the gabled bay. The front, four-panel door has a hopper light over it and sidelights. Various alterations have occurred: the laundry and bathroom have been modernised, a toilet added (c 1950s), floorboards have been removed and replaced with a sun hood over the gabled bay. The front, four-panel door has a hopper light over it and sidelights. A replacement picket fence is set on the boundary with a garden of lawn and roses, camellias and exotics. The carport detracts from the house.
The original owner, Mr Cullens, who was one of the first stationmasters at Katanning, built York House in 1910. Its name is derived from the town of York, where Cullens had come from.

Constructed from 1904
W J Rogers was an important member of the Katanning community and a very successful retailer who began with modest premises and expanded into his larger Central Store. Rogers was also a major influence in the move to buy the Roller Flour Mill when it ran into trouble in the mid 1920s. Other important contributions Rogers made to the town was his assistance (along with Richardson) in helping the Katanning Silver Band keep their new instruments, which were under threat of repossession with the advent of the Depression. Rogers also was involved in the establishment of the CWA in Katanning. The store therefore has historical significance and social significance, being one of the largest retailers in the Great Southern The building also adds to the streetscape of Clive Street, with its other retail stores and banks.
The former store is a two-storey brick building, with a flat corrugated iron roof concealed by a parapet. The verandah has been removed so that the fa?ade now appears stark. The fa<pade has been rendered and all the joinery has been replaced, including all the shop fronts. An undercover walkway was added to the arcade in April 2001.
In 1901, W J Rogers arrived in Katanning and set about establishing his store. He purchased CA Harris's Central Store in Clive Street. By 1904 Rogers was ready to build his own much larger premises. In July 1904 tenders were called for the new Roger's Store, the architect being F W Burwell of Fremantle. [GSH, 23/7/04] The new two-storey brick building had two entrances from Clive Street and three big windows for the drapery, boots, ironmongery and groceries. There was also provision for a big storeroom on the ground floor and on the top floor there was an extensive showroom and spacious living quarters for the family. [GSH, 30/07/04] The store is now occupied by various businesses, including Bakehouse Jeans, AMP Society and a travel centre.

Constructed from 1913
The Katanning Post Office signifies the way in which people have a need, whether for business or private reasons to communicate with each other. A post office facilitates this and is therefore a crucial service in any established and growing community and has high social significance.
The Post Office is a one storey red brick structure with terracotta roof tiles. The building is designed in the Federation Free Style. The central bay is arched and flanked by two narrow slot windows and arched porches. The walls are laid in soft red bricks in English bond in a rusticated pattern. The building has double hung sash windows, which have arched multipaned sections above. The arches are laid up in voussoir bricks with mannered stucco keystones that break through the arch to join a raised panel in the parapet. The timber joining remains mostly intact. The hipped and gabled roof is rich in its geometry and the focal point is the lantern shaped ventilator. The porch has been tiled. The office has two main entrances with arched brick porticos. Modifications and additions have taken place since the building was erected, including removal of all interior walls and original equipment. The telephone rooms have been demolished and the private boxes relocated. The standard Australia Post fit out spoils the interior space and obscures much detail. The timber ceilings have been retained.
In 1912 Mr J Park was the successful tenderer for the new post office - the original one having been built in 1892 of which A E Piesse was the first postmaster. The contract price for the new post office was £2482 / 4/ 10 and the building was completed in 1913, opening in April. The Great Southern Herald provided the following description: Entering the new building from Clive Street, through the lobbies and under the spacious arches there is on one side the public receiving box for letters and papers, and on the other the private letter boxes. A public telephone box is situated on either side opening from the lobbies. Passing through the folding doors there is an impression of appreciable roominess. The desks and writing facilities are arranged against the southern wall, between which the counter is some 25ft of floor and space. The counter is arranged in semi-circular fashion across the room. The main hall in which are erected all the necessary fittings, is about 40ft square, and light and ventilation have been studiously provided. The telephone room is situated in the northeast corner of the main hall, from which entrance is obtained to the battery room. In the opposite corner are the strongroom, built with concrete and lavatories also built into the main structure. Granolithic has been provided as flooring for the back verandah and two large tanks provide ample fresh water for drinking and other purposes. The general appearance both inside and out reveals careful workmanship; and the new building combines utility and adornment in this rapidly growing centre. [GSH, 23/4/13] The present Post Office was the first significant public building to be located on the eastern side of the railway line rather than the western side. It included a telephone exchange, weather equipment and stores for the railway workers. Since being built the original interior walls have been removed, the telephone rooms demolished and the private boxes relocated. The former post office building was utilised as an addition to the postmaster's residence.

Constructed from 1935
The site that the Commonwealth Bank building now stands has a long history of commercial use. The bank represented the economic growth and stability of the Shire of Katanning and its survival through the Depression years. The building also has some architectural and aesthetic significance, despite the 1960s extensions, which are fairly non-intrusive.
Originally a symmetrical brick and tile two-storey building with prominent vertical piers utilised for the entry. The building also features strong vertical and horizontal vertical lines and curves. The front elevation is treated in a symmetrical ABA rhythm, with the central bay being the dominant feature. Using stripped down classical organisation, decorative motifs such as fluted recessed reveals, panels and frieze have been applied in the Modern or Deco manner. In 1966, additions were made to the side and rear of the building, providing more office space for the growing number of staff and customers. These extensions affected the symmetry of the building as well as changing the central entrance to the side. The grey paint to the walls is inappropriate and the addition to the south intrusive.
Just after marrying in July 1894 and joining his family at Katanning, Paul Beeck pitched his tent on vacant land in Clive Street where the Commonwealth Bank now stands. On this block Beeck eventually built "a wood and iron shop, with living quarters attached, which was to be their home until his death in 1934". [GSH, 2/8/57, p.2] In 1935 the land was sold to the Commonwealth Bank. Unlike the rest of his family, Paul Beeck did not work on the land but rather decided to open his own saddlery and harness business in the town. However, his skills also extended to marvelous versatility. He was known as a "wizard with leather, could make an excellent iron tank, mend a watch, cut hair, give a smooth shave and if necessary, pull a tooth for a desperate patient". [Bignell, p. 153] His shop was popular and an integral part of the local business history of Katanning. His wife, Mary, also put her hand to most things and was for many years Katanning's only laundress. The present Commonwealth Bank building was erected in themed to late 1930s. In 1966 the bank underwent extensions costing more than $40,000. The extensions included the addition of a single storey to the western side of the building, as well as extensions to the rear to provide more office space. The Great Southern Herald reported on the activity: When the work was completed, the main entrance to the bank would be located in the new section facing Clive Street. This would open into some 400 square feet of public space. A special parking area for bank clients would be provided behind the premises with a separate entrance leading in from the car park. New office accommodation would be provided for the Branch Manager and the room now used by him would be taken over the Development Bank Field Officer. Office space would also be provided for his own staff. [GSH, 1/7/66,p. 1] The new extensions also allowed for an interview room, voucher room, storeroom, staff room and new staff toilets.

Constructed from 1904, Constructed from 1913
The Federal Hotel has historic value in its relationship to the early development of Katanning and also because of the precedent set by its second owner, Fairclough, with brewery contracts (see historical information). There is also some social value, as the hotel would have been one of the focal points of social activity and early hospitality and tourism.
Three-storey Federation Italianate hotel building in rendered brickwork. It has decorative strings and cornices with the words "Federal Hotel" in bas-relief over the first floor level. A suspended metal awning has replaced the two-storey verandah. The original joinery is in tact with windows in the form of double-hung sashes. The front doors are a pair of raised panel doors with sidelights and a three panel lead light over. New openings have been introduced in the salon bar area. Additions along Richardson Street are more ephemeral and appear ad hoc.
The Federal Hotel was constructed in 1904 as a two-storey hotel, the third storey was added in 1913. It was the third hotel for Katanning, opening its doors in September, after some controversy over whether Katanning needed another hotel. The original proprietor of the hotel was Alfred Pearmine and the manager was James Conroy. In about 1907 the hotel passed into the hands of the Fairclough family. It was James Fairclough who added the third storey, the family name still seen on this part of the hotel. The Fairclough's stayed on until the early 1920s. During this time at the Federal, Fairclough came to blows with the brewery to which he was contracted. As the brewery could not supply an order, Fairclough turned to another brewery and was sued by the first brewery for breach of contract. Fairclough took his case to the high court of Australia and won. As a result, Fairclough set a precedent whereby hotels could from then on deal with any brewery without breaching contract. The next licensee of the Federal was Lou Hambley, who ran the hotel from about World War II until the early 1960s.

Constructed from 1891
The cultural heritage significance of the Katanning Roller Flour Mill has been acknowledged in its permanent inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Places. The Premier Flour Mill has high historic and social significance. It was the first major industry to be established in the Great Southern and was a major factor in Katanning becoming the leading town of the region. Its establishment provided a major incentive to agriculture and the settlement of the surrounding country. The Mill has aesthetic value, being one of the key elements in the streetscape of Austral Terrace and scientifically significant in that it was the first supplier of the town's electricity, the mill itself being the first building to have an electric light installed. It also had the most up-to-date machinery of its time. The mill also has rarity value for its "completeness, authenticity and condition". [Considine and Griffiths, p. 64] 195
The mill is a three-storey painted brick and corrugated iron structure in Federation Warehouse style. In 1912 alterations were made to the mill, including an additional plant with subsequent alterations taking place up until the 1950s. Conservation works in 1980s saw the shops around the Austral Terrace / Clive Street corner removed to reveal the mill's early 20th century fabric. A verandah was added to the building in the 1990s.
With the success of their store and the establishment of the railway in Katanning, the Piesse brothers decided to build a flourmill. The York firm of Thorne, Bower and Stewart and equipped with machinery supplied by Otto Schumacher of Melbourne erected the mill in 1891, officially being opened on 1st May. Head miller Charles Quigley carried out the installation of the machinery. The mill was to become the most dominant in the Great Southern region, having its production capacity doubled by 1909 and extensive alterations and additions in 1912. Upon the death of F H Piesse in 1912 his son Frederick took over the management of the mill. Further improvements were made, which included gantries, electric elevators and conveyors, a storehouse capable of holding 1,500 tons. In 1915 the mill also erected the five silos for wheat storage. The importance of the mill to the town was heightened when it became the sole supplier of electricity to the town in the early 1900s, "thanks to an act of Parliament introduced by F Piesse who was the member for Katanning at the time". [Lang, p. 163] After much debate and friction within the community, mainly due to the higher than average charges the mill levied, the electricity supply was taken over by the SEC in 1961. There were many factors that contributed to the eventual demise of the Piesse family's commercial dominance in Katanning and of the mill itself. The first was the death of Frederick Piesse in 1925, after which the running of the family company became lax. The second was the eventual poor trading position of the milling industry in 1927, primarily due to poor quality wheat, the relocation of poultry farms closer to Perth and the phasing out of horses. Then there was the extravagant lifestyle of the Piesse family, which resulted in major financial difficulties, even though they had already sold off their Kobeelya estate. The then WA Bank decided to clear up the Piesse estate and sell the mill. The 1927 a group of local farmers and business people formed the Katanning Flour Milling Co., and bought the mill for £25,000, with the Piesse family retaining a major shareholding interest in the new company. A new generator was installed, more export markets were established and the product continued to be used by all local bakers. The new company, which had adopted the name "Swan Flour" for the product, ran the mill until 1970, when the mill had become unprofitable and was going to be closed. It was projected that the site would be developed as a major retail-shopping complex, but this was prevented when a local company was formed and the mill purchased by them for $70,000. The mill then continued until 1979. The mill was then acquired by the Shire of Katanning and converted into a museum through the efforts of the Katanning Historical Society. In 1988 the Austral Terrace shop was removed and the verandah was replaced. Bicentennial funding was received to pay for these renovations. The main building now houses the Katanning Tourist Bureau.

Constructed from 1913
The W Challenge Bank (fmr Westpac Bank) represents the economic growth of Katanning, being one of many banks established in the Shire along Clive Street, although this bank building is located on the western side of the railway line. The building has some aesthetic significance with a strongly designed (classical form) central bay and prominent corner location.
The original building is a three bay frontage with a tiled gambrel roof and stucco facade, symmetrically disbursed around a pedimented central bay with rusticated pilasters and engaged ionic columns. The double hung windows appear to have been replaced. The design style could be described as Federation Free Classical. To the left is a later addition, which is more or less in keeping with the original building. An ATM (automatic teller machine) was installed at the front of the building in October 2000.
In 1910, a branch of the Bank of New South Wales was opened in Albion Street, then G W Cussen set up temporary premises for the bank in Clive Street. In December 1911, Porter & Thomas Architects, from Perth called for tenders for alterations and additions to the Bank of New South Wales, which were completed in 1912. In 1927, the Bank of New South Wales absorbed the WA Bank.

Constructed from 1891
17440 Katanning Police Station
The former sergeant's house is one of the early remaining buildings in Katanning and represents the presence of law and order in the growing town.
Building is a single storey brick house, with a hipped and gabled corrugated zincalume roof. It features typical tuck-pointed stretcher bond brickwork, double hung sash windows and slender Tuscan posts on the verandah. The original verandah floor has been replaced with concrete, and an extension, carport and casement window were added in the 1960ss.
In June 1891 the government called tenders for the erection of police quarters and the successful contractors were Thorn, Bower and Stewart. The quarters were erected that same year, along with the station and cells. The new building was not without fault, with the mantle piece in the front room riddled with white ants, no oven in the kitchen, no water closet for the use of business, lack of security and locking, and windows wide enough for two people to climb out of at the same time. The quarters were occupied in December 1892 by the towns' first police constable, Tom Conner.

Constructed from 1891
The Police Station and Courthouse are not the original buildings, but are in the same location as the original buildings and therefore represent the continued use of this part of town as the location for those places of law and order.
The Police Station is built of light coloured brick which is rendered with a Colourbond roof in the Western Australian 1970s regional style.
In 1891, the first Police Quarters were erected in Katanning. [Refer A2998 MI 1996] In 1891, the police station was built next to the quarters, also designed by George Temple Poole, which incorporated cells. A courthouse was built next to the station building. In 1960 work commenced on a new courthouse and offices on the other side of Clive Street, opposite the former courthouse, which was incorporated into the police station and served as the constables recreation room. The successful contractor for the new courthouse was R. J. Davies for a cost of £23 420. The site was cleared by local bulldozing contractor, G. M. Doak.
