Constructed from 1960
The Police Station and Courthouse are not the original buildings, but are in the same location as the original buildings and therefore represent the continued use of this part of town as the location for those places of law and order.
Katanning Courthouse is a concrete frame and brick infill panel building with a large feature single storey stone construction section in the Post-War International style. The building has a flat roof and is raised on a low podium.
In 1891, the first Police Quarters were erected in Katanning. [Refer A2998 MI 1996] In 1891,a police station was built next to the quarters, also designed by George Temple Poole, which incorporated cells. A courthouse was built next to the station building. In 1960 work commenced on a new courthouse and offices on the other side of Clive Street, opposite the former courthouse, which was incorporated into the police station and served as the constables recreation room. The successful contractor for the new courthouse was R J Davies for a cost of £23 420. Local bulldozing contractor, G M Doak cleared the site. In December 1961, the courthouse was officially opened by the then Attorney General, Hon. A. F. Watts.

Constructed from 1905
As many of Thomson's buildings have been some of the most outstanding in Katanning, it seems fitting that his own residence should be a significant site. Thomson was not only a prolific builder, and master of his craft, but also an active and productive member of the Katanning community. It has streetscape value, as it is located near the entrance to the town, as well as some aesthetic value, although alterations have occurred. There is also high social significance associated with this site, having been used for functions, meetings and other social events.
The former Thomson residence is a single storey Federation Bungalow style of brick construction with roughcast render (formerly white) on all external walls, hence it being popularly known as the "White House". It has a terracotta-tiled roof, and a timber verandah surrounding most of the house with heavy tapered verandah posts and decorative valance and brackets. The roof scape is richly rendered with a broken brick profile and gables to the main roof and over the bay windows. There are two large bay windows with door openings facing Clive Street with unusual patterned lead lighting. Quite extensive alterations and additions have occurred to the south and east sides. The main rooms have been converted to restaurant and function areas. The garden is surrounded by a random rubble conglomerate stonewall with a bitumen drive dividing the garden. The garden consists of lawn and exotic plants.
Alexander Thomson moved to Katanning in 1905 and became a very well known and popular builder. He is responsible for the construction of most of the civic buildings in Katanning, as well as several imposing private residences. Thomson built this residence himself, and it became a venue for many meetings, committees and public activities. It was also popular for social functions and gatherings. Since Thomson's death, the house has had many owners, but is now owned by G D W Pty Ltd and used as a function centre for local events. Unit accommodation has been added.

Woodchester is of historical, social and architectural significance. The Richardson family were one of the most significant families in Katanning, running a very successful business operation in the town. R L Richardson was a respected member of the community having a strong involvement not only in his business but also in the Baptist Church. The house is unique in design and location and its internal timber detailing is original and inspired. The owners, E & R McFarland have the original plan of the house and also the original septic tank plan.
A single storey, beautifully detailed South African style rendered brick house with a corner porch covered by a flat roof carried on Tuscan columns. The roof is terracotta tiled, and gables are treated in the Dutch manner with banks of three leadlight casements in them and suspended sunhoods. All internal rooms have timber detailing - a feature of the house. Some alterations have been made to modernise the kitchen and bathroom and two new bathrooms added in April 1997. A fine garden of lawns with palms, prunus, cypress and other exotics.
R L Richardson, who took over the management of the Piesse store in 1904, had Woodchester built for his family in 1927. Prior to this Richardson lived in "The Pines", which now forms part of Bethshan Lodge for the frail aged. R1 Richardson came to Katanning from Valveen, South Australia. "Woodchester" is a locality near their old family farm. Messrs Richardson & Co. increased the store's turnover by establishing a barter system with the local farmers and was known for his benevolent nature with families unable to pay for their goods. His success enabled him to eventually expand his business into other districts in the lower Great Southern. The location was significant in that it had a view directly across town to the Richardson store. The Richardson family owned the house until 1974 when Mr McFarland, a local furniture dealer and prominent member of the community, purchased it. The residence now incorporates Bed and Breakfast facilities.

The Great Southern Herald was the first newspaper to be established in the Shire of Katanning and was a significant voice of the community. It represents the growth of the town and outlying areas, and the way people communicate and keep informed of issues in their own community and the rest of the country and the world. The newspaper also represents the developments in technology and printing.
A modified Inter-war Bungalow that has been adapted for the newspaper's offices and print runs. The original house has a symmetrical fa?ade with central door and flanking casements in bands of three under a full width verandah. The place is much altered and has substantial industrial additions.
In 1901, Katanning had its first newspaper printing weekly, the Great Southern Herald, which was established by Mr Stevens of York and with Mr E Mitchell as editor. Between 1901 and 1906 the paper twice relocated to new premises "nearer the centre of town but little better in architecture". In 1916 a fire destroyed the office from which the Herald was operating, and the paper came very close to calling it a day. However the then owner, Mr Cullen, "immediately purchased type and machinery and kept production going while the Piesse Family, who owned the building, re-built it in brick". After its absorption of Katanning's second newspaper, the Southern Districts Advocate, in 1936, the paper was published twice weekly and covered the whole of the Katanning district. The Company ceased commercial print operations in 2000. The weekly newspaper was printed in Albany form 1978 to 2003, then in Perth from 2003. The print shop at the rear of the building was leased to the Katanning Historical Society to be used as a museum to preserve the town's print history.

The Bank Buildings has some aesthetic significance, adding to the streetscape of Clive Street. It is also significant in that much of the original fabric is in tact and little alterations have been made, particularly to the exterior. It is also historically significant in that it contains an original baker's oven.
A restrained Federation Italianate two-storey building of three shops and residences with its exterior little altered. It has a panelled balustrade to the parapet with a curved pediment over the central bay with "Bank Buildings AD 1909" in bas-relief. The brickwork is tuck-pointed and the upper windows are double hung sashes. The original timber shop fronts are in place, with its original bull nosed verandah. It has pressed metal ceilings and timber floors. Arches join all three shops. Garage and shed were re-roofed with steel in May 2001.
The Bank Buildings were constructed in 1909 and although it has never housed banking institutions it has been utilised for other commercial purposes. It has been the site of a baker and still contains the original bakers oven, as well as being used as a tailor shop. The upper level has also been utilised for residential space. The Bank Buildings have housed PM's Restaurant, Katanning Family Steakhouse, Taylor's Family Restaurant and has living quarters upstairs. There is a shed out the back which has the remains of intown stables used for the old Baker's horse and cart.

The residence of Cecil Piesse is historically significant in that it was part of the Piesse properties, built specifically by Frederick H Piesse for his son. Their generous father gave the sons many opportunities in life, and although the other house Kulal - belonging to Fred -expanded as he succeeded, Cecil was not so successful and hence the few alterations and additions which were made to the house. Its internal detailing has much architectural / aesthetic significance.
Federation Bungalow with three-quarter return verandah. The residence is constructed of brick with a corrugated iron roof. The gables were half timbered and roughcast rendered, the front one has been replaced. Windows are double hung casements with sunhoods over the exposed facades. The original timber floor of the verandah has been removed and replaced with a concrete slab. The original leadlight windows above the entry are in good condition. The rear verandah has been enclosed. The house is currently being renovated. Damp coursing has been done adding a rendered cream lower part to the external walls. The house has been rewired, some ceilings and cornices are in the process of being replaced, not to original but to fit in with the era of the house. One internal wall and chimney has been removed in the kitchen allowing for more practical living space. A bedroom is being converted into a bathroom and other renovations are yet to take place. The maids bells are still in place (but not working). There is a replacement picket fence and cottage garden with lawns.
This was one of two originally identical houses that Frederick H Piesse had built for his sons Fred and Cecil, this one being for Cecil. Cecil died by drowning while gold prospecting at Marvel Loch.

Constructed from 1942
The site on which the Filmer family built their shop and the building itself, is a well-known landmark and meeting place for locals. The building also has some architectural significance, being a unique style of architecture in the town of Katanning.
Constructed from brick with a flat corrugated iron roof. The style of the building alludes to the Inter-war functionalist architecture with its simple curved lines and flat roof concealed by a parapet. The Clive Street fa?ade has a suspended awning with a pressed metal lining and the shop fronts are authentic with their metal frames and plate glass. The copies are stylised versions of classical ones.
In 1904 the Filmer family moved from South Australia to settle on land at Katanning. One of the Filmer sons, Walter J., moved into the town in 1920 and set up business (Filmer and Forbes Limited) in a small shop owned by the Cass family near the corner of Clive and Daping Streets because he saw the "opportunities offering in motor power". [Bignell, p.200] He also set himself up as a land agent. Progressively Filmer moved into larger premises until finally in 1938 he purchased "a vacant block on the corner of Clive and Daping and had Philpott and Baldwin build his own premises (completed in 1942)". [Anderson,p.433] It was named "Filmer's Corner". As soon as she was old enough, Filmer's daughter Ivy began working as an office girl for her father. In addition, his sons were to later join him in the business, which had considerably extended. The firm gained a solid reputation in farm machinery - sales, parts and services. In the late 1940s and 50s the adjoining block was purchased from Arthur Hobbs (the baker) and additions were made to the store. Filmer retired in 1951, but the business continued to operate with the sons in charge, changing the trading name to Filmer Bros. It is currently occupied by Cut'n'Cote Paints but still referred to as "Filmer's Corner".

Constructed from 1911
The ANZ Bank alludes to the boom time in Katanning, when there was much building activity, particularly on the eastern side of the railway line. It was at this time that Katanning was really developing as a town and many services and amenities were needed for the growing population. The building is a substantial two-storey structure thereby giving it some aesthetic and architectural value. At its time of construction it was considered one of the chief architectural structures of the town. The ANZ Bank recently celebrated 100 years of banking in Katanning.
A two storey Federation Free Style bank and manager's residence. It is symmetrically organised around the disproportionate entry portico. The portico features an exaggerated baroque like broken pediment over the arched entry, with large metopes and dentils under the cornice. The portico is flanked by arched windows. The first floor is recessed with a verandah within the setback. The verandah is carried by stout piers with stylised capitals carrying in turn the lintel. Over the lintel the gutter is carried on closely spaced brackets. The balustrade to the verandah is made of pierced masonry. The tiled roof has decorative ridge tiles. A wrought iron fence has been added to the front of the building.
The Union Bank commenced business in 1904, the manager being N J Treleavan, making three banks in the town. The bank was situated in the building vacated by W J Rogers, who had built a new store and quarters. In 1911 the bank erected its own premises. This large two-storey structure consisted of banking chamber, manager's room and strong room, as well as a commodious private residence for the manager and his family. In 1931 Treleavan was succeeded by F W Skevington, then in 1934 Mr N W Broun was appointed. The first customers of the Union Bank were Ross and Thomas Anderson. In the early 1950s the Union Bank and the Australasia Bank merged to form the ANZ Bank.

Constructed from 1926
The former St Rita's school was a successful catholic school and is significant in its connection to the education of the children of Katanning and outlying districts.
The school is a one storey brick and corrugated zincalume structure. The original 1926 school building is of red brick and the 1958 rooms are cream bricks. It is a simply designed building to which several additions have been made. The recent is visually discordant. An undercover walkway was added in April 2000. Additions and upgrades made 2000-2004.
In 1926 the Sisters of Our Lady of the Mission arrived in Katanning to set up their own school and convent. St Rita's, as it was first called, began with 47 pupils in the original St Patrick's church at the southern end of Austral Terrace. By the end of 1926 the number of pupils had more than doubled. The Sisters first lived in 12 Britannia Street, until they purchased the old Brockhurst hospital building, which they used as both a convent and boarding facility. With increasing student numbers a brick, three-roomed school with a verandah was built on the block, which had been recently purchased for the new St Patrick's Church. The school cost approx. £1000 to build, the funds having been raised through the efforts of the children and their families. It was opened and blessed by Archbishop Clune on 5th December 1927. They later extended into secondary education and established an ambitious two-storey convent building, which included some secondary level out-of-town student accommodation. [This is now known as Reidy House] Unfortunately, the secondary school and boarding facilities closed in 1957 due to the recession being experienced. The Sisters' attention returned to just primary school education, making additions to the original 1926 school building in 1958 by the addition of two more rooms. St Rita's School is now known as St Patrick's. The Sisters then withdrew their services to the town and the Catholic Education Department now maintain the school.

Constructed from 1895, Constructed from 1900
25 Daping Street is historically significant in that it is one of the older residences in Katanning. It has remained for the most part unaltered. There is also an element of architectural significance in its Flemish bond brickwork, which is a unique feature in this district.
Comments: Le. style, additional, modifications etc. A single storey Federation style bungalow, with Flemish bond brickwork, corrugated iron roof, double hung sash windows (which are still in good condition) and four chimneys of corbelled brickwork. The return verandah floor has been replaced with concrete and steel posts support the verandah roof. On the northwestern side, two original pressed steel hoods are still present over the windows. The house has had multiple extensions. A lean-to addition has been made at the rear of the house and the northwest wall has been entirely rendered, as has a portion of the front wall. The main entry door has side and fan lights. The garden has a cyclone fence, lawns and a large Chinese pepper tree.
The original owner of this residence was Mr W Andrews, who had bought much land in the Katanning area during the late 1890s. By 1900 the name on the title was Edith Andrews, his widow. When Edith died in 1907 the property went to Mrs Lena Norton Atwell (more than likely the Andrews' daughter). In 1950 George William Rodwell and Gladys Beryl Rodwell purchased the 3 lots, which made up the estate, amalgamated them and subdivided them in the opposite direction. The house was on Lot 1 and is now owned by their son George William (jnr).

Constructed from 1902
The Dore Street School (Katanning Primary School) has historic and social significance. From its opening in 1902 and then with a regular program of additions to accommodate growing enrolments and the closure of small outlying schools, the school reflects the expansion of the Shire of Katanning to a major centre of the Great Southern Region. The school has played an integral role in the town of Katanning as well as in the Great Southern Region as a place of learning and social interaction for it pupils for over 95 years. There are children from a variety of ethnic groups enrolled at the school, many of whom, English is their second language.
A complex of mainly brick construction. Structures realised over an extensive period of time reflecting the style of the day in each campaign. The dominant visual form is rendered walls and tiled pitched roofs with a strong "moderne" style entry.
On 23 April 1902, Reserve 5771, bounded by Dare Street, Daping Street and Bokarup Street and the then unformed Dore Street, was set apart for a school site. The size of this reserve meant that the school could be expanded in the future, to meet increased enrolments and growing needs and requirements. In July 1902, the contract for the erection of the school and quarters was awarded to J H Brown for a cost of £1,057/2/0. The contract was completed in December of that year. In 1903, the new school, which was able to accommodate 100 pupils, was opened. The school was constructed of brick and consisted of two classrooms, with a hat lobby and lavatory each for boys and girls, two shelter sheds (one each for boys and girls), outside latrines and two 1000 gn tanks were also provided. A teacher's quarters was also built along Daping Street. It was not long before additional classroom space was required, and a series of extensions to the original school building occurred in 1905, 1911, 1912, 1920, 1922, 1923, 1947, 1951-53. In 1915, further accommodation was supplied by the construction of two (separate) Pavilion Classrooms located on either side of the main school building closest to Dore Street (no longer extant). Other additions to the Katanning Primary School comprised the relocation of former school buildings to the Katanning site. In 1912 the former Wagin Manual Training School building was relocated to the site. In 1946, approval for the relocation of the Dongolocking school - a timber, asbestos and corrugated iron building - to Katanning was given. In 1949, former Whittakers Mill school quarters were brought to Katanning to provide accommodation for the then Assistant Head Teacher. In February 1960, the school was officially called the Katanning Primary School, and further works and extensions were carried out between 1961 and 1967. In 1980, a new canteen and undercovered area was added. In 1981, the old school quarters were demolished. In 1996 the top quadrangle area was paved and a gazebo was built. In 2000 a further upgrade of the quadrangle was undertaken. In 2004/2005 Dongolocking School was relocated to the Katanning Museum Site, rather than at Bokarup St end of school. A Pre-primary playground and shade cloth area have been added to the lower wing of the school.

Constructed from 1889, Constructed from 1939
The development of the Great Southern Railway greatly influenced the development of Katanning, with a train station being located in Katanning and the town officially declared. The rail enabled existing markets and industries to grow and develop, such as sheep and wheat, and also stimulated the introduction of new ones, such as tourism. The railway, marked by the cairn, therefore has high social and historic significance.
1889 (railway) 1939 (memorial) As part of their Jubilee celebrations of 1939, the community of Katanning erected a cairn to commemorate the completion of the Great Southern Railway. The railway was officially opened in February 1889, and settlers from all over Katanning Gathered at their newly erected station to greet the first trainload of passengers.

Constructed from 1958, Constructed from 1952
The school represents the stability and growth of Katanning, as it was the first time a five-year school had been established in the Shire. This meant that students no longer had to leave the shire to complete their education. It also alludes to the importance Katanning had as a regional centre.
The school has undergone many extensions since originally established to allow for the growing intake of pupils and increased classes. The high school is a mixture of post-war styles, each a response to a changing program. Initial additions were in harmony with the early sections of the school. Later additions and new buildings are less tied in style.
The Golf Links Road site was first developed as a school with the opening of the Bristol units in 1952. Further expansion then followed in 1958 "when the first wing of what is now the main section was constructed. This wing consisted of two classrooms and the science room". [GSH, 19/6/64, p.3] The Golf Links Road section of the school was still part of the Katanning Junior High School at this time, but in 1959 the school was divided into two, with the Golf Links Road section being up-graded to a full three-year high school. [GSH, 19/6/64, p.3] In 1959, therefore, tenders were called for "an extension of the existing brick and tile block to provide staff and storerooms, and the filling in of the north-west and south-west faces of the assembly area fronting the present block with additional structures to provide domestic science and manual training centres, administrative block, shelter and toilet facilities and a canteen". [GSH,28/8/59,p.l] The original plans and specifications showed that the existing brick block along the northeast face of the assembly area was extended to the south to provide a 21ft by 22ft staff room, plus two small storerooms, making the block about 150ft long. The new brick and tile at the southwest frontage was 22ft by 150ft. The block also included a domestic science centre, 74ft by 22ft, a bed-sitting-fitting room and a storeroom. The other half of the block contained the manual training room, a timber storeroom and a sports store with an external opening to the assembly area. The northwest frontage along Golf Links Road contained another block, 154ft by 24ft. At the western end was the toilet, change room and cloakroom facilities for girls. At the northern end were the boy's facilities. The canteen erected was 10ft by 24ft and it opened onto a sheltered area (52ft by 24ft). The administrative block was built with a 12ft by 12ft entrance lobby, a 16ft by 12ft office for the Principal, a 14ft by 10ft deputy principal's office, a 10ft by 10ft first mistress; office and a switch room and storerooms. The successful contractor for the additions was E C Murray Pty Ltd for £44,460. [Building and Construction, 9/10/59,pi5] The new additions were completed and opened on 5U May 1961. In 1962 a metalwork room and two classrooms were added to the southern ends of the two main wings. In 1963 further additions were made. An art room was added to one wing and a new library and utility block was joined onto the two main wings. The architect was Margaret Feilman and the builder, Westdorp Constructions. The contract price was £33,720. [WA, 29/6/63,p 15]. The grounds also underwent a comprehensive development scheme, with tennis and basketball courts, hockey fields and football oval. A gymnasium was built dining the 1980's and both quadrangles have been extensively upgraded with the addition of gardens and gazebo's.

Remains of Historical interest due to the close association with the Kobeelya Girls School.
Modifications made prior to purchase i.e. walls removed and doors filled in etc. Plans of these modifications are available. Modifications made include the kitchen being refurbished and the verandah enclosed.
The residence was owned by Mrs Bean, who in 1951 offered it for sale to Kobeelya, thus alleviating the pressure of boarding accommodation. It became known as "St Christopher's" under the care of Miss Niven. With the appointment of Mr Blom in 1966 as Principal, the building was renovated to become the Headmaster's residence. It remained the principal's residence until the closure of Kobeelya and was then sold as a private residence.

Bridge 0351, Great Southern Highway is a double lane timber, steel and concrete road bridge spanning a minor waterway southeast of Katanning. The bridge is approximately 7.2 m long, 9.7 m wide and sits approximately 1 m above the gully bed. The trestle bridge consists of a single span constructed along a northwest-southeast axis. The bridge abutments consist of concrete and masonry rubble wing walls on top of a solid concrete base. The original bridge deck is not visible but is assumed to be timber planks, set onto a series of round timber log stringers set between the abutments. The stringers rest on a dressed timber halfcap. The outer edges of the span are protected by galvanised steel plates. The surface of the bridge consists of a bituminised road kerbed with concrete, with galvanised steel safety barriers affixed to galvanised steel safety rails. These in turn are bolted to the steel edge plates as well as the timber stringers below. No pedestrian access path is provided.
The economic policies of the Western Australian government during the 1920s can be described as broadly expansionist, in particular agricultural and pastoral expansion. However, these policies suffered severe contraction due to droughts and the effects of the Great Depression. At the end of the 1920s and into the early 1930s, the government responded in a number of ways, including stimulating the building market and investing in the expansion of industrial development such as the mining industry or capital works projects such as dams, sewerage, clearing and roads. The development of roads became particularly important as families migrated to Perth seeking work, resulting in rapid urbanisation. The Main Roads Board was established in 1926, taking over some of the responsibilities of the Public Works Department. The board was re-established as the Main Roads Department in 1930. Main Roads became an active part of the state’s response to the economic crisis, providing short-term work for unemployed on a variety of infrastructure projects, even while struggling to cut costs and staff within their own structure. These works included road works and bridgeworks, with a focus on the southwest of the state. Timber trestle bridges were a common sight since the early days of the Swan River Colony as timber was easily obtainable and fire-resistant. As such the use of concrete for abutments and as a foundation structure was still relatively unknown in the inter-war period.
