Physical Description

Lange Homestead, situated on approximately 300 acres, is a stone and cement Federation Bungalow residence constructed in 1913. A dressed wooden verandah surrounds the house, with majestic entry steps leading to the front door on the Eastern side. The homestead consists of 7 bedrooms in varying size, a substantially sized kitchen with adjoining pantry, and an interior bathroom. There are polished timber floorboards throughout. A separate washhouse lies to the north of the homestead complete with three coppers, a wool shed, a tool shed and an outside toilet. Little evidence has been provided to indicate the condition of the homestead and its associated structures.

History

On 25 December 1826, Albany became the site of the first British settlement in the state of Western Australia. King George formally proclaimed British occupation on 21 January 1827, and the first town plans for Albany – then named King George Sound - were drawn up by Commandant Captain J Wakefield in the same year. In 1932 King George Sound was officially renamed Albany by Governor Stirling, and Surveyor, General J S Roe, announced the first private land allocations – 28 Albany town lots, eight suburban lots and some rural land. The settlement slowly grew with the establishment of the Perth to Albany Road in c. 1935 and the construction of the port jetty in 1837 boosting transportation and communication to and from Albany.
