Building forms part of remnant building stock which makes up historic town's fabric.
Single-storey Victorian styled home c.1880s. Constructed in brick and iron, it has decorative faceted front bay window, bullnose verandah, double hung sash windows, central front door with fanlight and sidelights.
Belonged to James Turton, the owner of Turton's Brickworks. Turton migrated to WA from England. In 1886 he established a brick manufacturing works in Guildford. Turton's brickworks and clay pits were located on banks overlooking the Helena River at closest point with Swan River. Brickworks were established in 1880s. By 1890s the brickworks were producing drain pipes and had become an important early secondary industry in Guildford.
By 1901 Turton was in partnership with Mr F. Piercy and was producing water supply piping and flat roof tiles. Not long after Piercy left Turton in 1907 the business ran into difficulty. Turton was to become bankrupt twice and eventually died a poor man while living in a house in West Midland (now demolished).
