Values

The place is unique in Western Australia as a memorial to military nurses who have served in all conflicts. The original garden was erected with volunteer labour and donated resources, illustrating its importance to the local community at the time, especially the Albany Sub-branch of the Returned and Services League.

Physical Description

A formal, geometrically planned rose garden, circular in shape. It is to the north of the Albany Railway Station and south of Stirling Terrace, and has car parks either side to the east and west. At the centre of the circular design is a memorial, consisting of a pink and green granite plinth topped with a cement and limestone birdbath.

History

In 1935 the Albany sub-branch of the Returned & Services League (RSL) began work on converting the land into an ornamental garden, with the assistance of volunteer labourers and using donated plants. It was named Memorial Garden, and in 1937 it was agreed a tablet should be placed at the base of the central fountain, explaining that the gardens were dedicated to the War Nurses, in commemoration of their courageous efforts in World War One. The gardens were officially opened on Easter Sunday 1937 by Mrs A E White, a member of one of the earliest contingents of nurses to travel overseas for service during the Great War.
