05371 Vasse River (and Estuary)

Statement of Significance

The Vasse River has natural and cultural heritage significance as it attracted the early settlers to the fertile land surrounding its course and afforded safe anchorage to vessels. It is also significant for its scientific value as a habitat for water birds and has substantial aesthetic value, giving much of the area its visual character.

Physical Description

A watercourse system.
The Vasse River with its mouth at Wonnerup remains to be one of the major watercourses in Busselton. The site includes about 1114ha, Ramsar site 38, Layman Road, Wonnerup, extending east from Ford Road alignment, Busselton, generally comprising all non-freehold land within the boundaries of the Vasse and Wonnerup Estuaries, Nature Reserve T 31188 (Sabina Nature Reserve) and those parts of Tuart Forest National Park on the eastern side of the estuaries and west of the Bussell Highway.

History

The Vasse River has altered significantly due to changing flow patterns, channel widening processes, removal of endemic vegetation and the development in the catchment. During warmer months, the water flow is seriously slowed down due to overgrowth of algae. Consequently, the waterway is closed to public use.
A drainage construction programme began in 1927 to avoid low-lying areas in the district from flooding.
