The place is significant because of its architectural style and its association with prominent people. It is a large two storeye house with dominant timber verandahs set on high ground wand with extensive views. It was built and owned by Dr Samuel MaCauley medical practitioner in Cottesloe.
The house which is situated on the high side of the street commands panoramic views of the sea from its wide verandahs on three sides, which have heavy timber balustrades and barge board detail. A wide stairway leads to the leadlight front door. The front limestone wall continues up the side to join the foundations of the house. The roof has elegant chimneys and is topped by small finials.

Constructed c.1890
Built during the 1890's, this fine two storey house was once the home of Dr Samuel MaCauley who settled and practiced in Cottesloe at the turn of the century. Later it was owned by Judge Ackland, one time mayor of Cottesloe.
Small addition on one side under the verandah , which is out of character, otherwise very good.
