The place is a landmark in the town, being its most substantial and imposing building.
The place has been a meeting place and social venue since its opening in 1928.
The place was the first hotel constructed in the town and is associated with its development in the 1910s and 1920s.
The place is representative of the Federation Free style and of the ‘corner pub’.
Physical Description
The place is a brick, timber and iron building constructed in the Federation Filigree style occupying a corner location in the town of Kukerin. A two-storey building, the place also has a two storey verandah which wraps around the two street elevations and is truncated at the corner. The verandah has decorative timber balustrading. There are gables at the truncated corner and at the main entry on Scadden Street.
The walls are constructed in fair-faced Stretcher bond brickwork.
A single storey wing extends from the north-west corner of the building at ground floor.
History
The area around Kukerin had largely been taken by 1910, by miners disillusioned of the goldfields or British migrants. The railway was extended to the town in 1912 and various public buildings began to be erected in the 1910s and 1920s concurrent to the place’s growth.
Kukerin Hotel was constructed for the Northam Brewery. It was designed by L. Bowser Cumpston and built by J. Blakeman. The hotel was opened on 15 September 1928 and incorporated bar and dining facilities and accommodation.
In the 1990s, the hotel suffered from lack of maintenance to the stage that the Wagin Health Inspector issued a work order on the bar and kitchen.
At the time of the 1996 assessment only the main bar was in operation.
